Man, something about Bittorrent just isn't clicking in my head. I think it's because no matter how much I'm trying to read about hosting files, trackers, seeds, etc., I'm trying to make BT something that it isn't.

Basically, I really don't want to download, though downloading is working for me. All I'm interested in doing is sharing my jdorama captures with others. I meant to snail-mail dvds to ruroshin so he could seed them for me, but I was thinking why can't I just do it myself?

Here's what I THINK are the steps, and what I've done thus far:

- Installed Bittorrent on my hosting comptuer, a Windows XP Pro PC. Downloaded a few jdorama files on that PC without a problem.

- Set up a second PC, also running Windows XP Pro and Bittorrent. Also able to download on this PC.

- Downloaded and installed CompleteDir. Created a torrent file on the serving PC using the announce URL "http://www.d-addicts.com/bt/tracker.php/announce". The file's sitting on the serving PC.

- Uploaded the torrent file to d-addicts.

- Went to the second PC, and successfully downloaded the torrent file off of d-addicts. However, when it open the Bittorrent dialog box, the download is stuck at 0-percent.

I thought the tracker is supposed to direct my testing PC to my serving PC? It's this point that just isn't making sense. I made sure my serving PC doesn't have any firewall in the way. I have the firewall disabled, and the PC's connected directly to my cable modem. I understand that the more people start downloading a single file, the better the downloading overall, but there's got to be someone that starts the process!

The thread's name is very correct... I'm basically clueless at this point!!!!! Sad

When you've downloaded the torrent file you should be able to start the bittorrent client and when it asks you where to start (or continue) the file you point it to the complete version you want to seed. It should check the integrity of the file (checksum all the 64k or 256k chunks you've made - this might take awhile depending on how big the file is, how fast your pc/hdd is) and then jump to 100% and start seeding.

Whatever client you are using it will ask you where you want to 'save' the file, as long as you do this to the directory the complete file is in it should work.

If you use SHADOWS experiental client (http://bt.degreez.net/) it will tell you if you have a firewall problem (check the colour of the lamps in the top right corner of dialog box, click on them for more info).

Hope that helps a little...

That was it!!!!!!!!! It's working now! That step was never that clear to me, and many of the web sites never really talked about doing this. There's very little focus towards seeding on these web sites... This just goes to show you can have the best technologies available, but the documentation (also written by techies) just sucks the wet one. Sad

Sooooooo... To summarize the steps for the beginning peer-to-peer trading people like myself:

1) Download a Bittorrent client, and install it according to the instructions given.

1A) Make sure ports 6881 thru 6889 is open between your PC and your ISP.

2) Create a torrent file. Make sure you define the correct announce URL of the tracker you intend to utilize. The default URL in the torrent creation tool more likely is not the correct one.

3) Upload the newly created torrent file to the tracker. Document the upload with as much information about the file as you can in the comments section:
- Does it have English subtitles?
- What format is it in? What codec would I need to play it?
- Is the file VCD or SVCD compatible?
- Who created the file?
- Grade the file (using A-F grading scale)

4) YOU as the one who is starting the seeding MUST "download" the file on the same machine that's hosting the file, either by clicking on the link at the tracker site, or just open the torrent file you created. In either case, save the download to the exact same location as the original file. It WILL NOT overwrite the file. it'll instead verify the file, then report back to the tracker. This is why I think the term "download" in this step is very misleading.

5) Depending on your platform (Windows, Macintosh, etc.), leave your PC on and others will start downloading off of it. For Macintosh users like myself, you MUST leave the Bittorrent client running - it does not run as a service like the Windows version.

I hope this helps! And also, let me know if there are errors in these steps, or improvements I should make.

you can actually open from ports 6881 up to 6999. If u open ports 6881-6889, u'll only be able to have a max of 9 torrents active since each torrent uses 1 port.

some people say the newer version of shadow bt is buggy. maybe you can try the previous version of the client or you can use alternatives such as ABC, Azureus, Eikes 3.2.1b, Burst! etc... so many clients that can be used.

does it happen only when u are trying to download torrents with a large number of seeders/leechers?
It might just be that u've reached the maximum number of open conections. My Pc i think has a limit of around 350 connections open so on Azureus, I put a restriction to only have a maximum connection of 64 for each torrent. After diong this, I never had problems again...

hmm.. i believe that could be the reason.. that torrent has about 60 seeds and over hundred leechers at that time.. how can i put that restriction and what number shall i put it too?

if ur using the official or shadow client, I used to add torrent parameters on the command line parameter of bt in the file folders edit dialog box on the control panel. But I dont remember the parameter for limiting no of connections anymore.

You could ask around for the parameter name or you could switch to a different client. Not sure about others but the one i use (azureus) has that capability as part of the configuration options.
