Yes, but then the "if I lie [and break this promise] I will be made to swallow 1000 needles" saying taken serious - *very* serious- by Manami in LIFE was more traumatic for me then Nodame being hit with a frying pan ( but the choking scene after she messed a bit with Chiakis PC was) - not to mention other sick stuff Manami is doing to a "former friend"
But, hey, my brain is not in a good condition after being forced to write a paper about Richard Wagner all day... I won't listen to his operas for quite a long time, when I am finally done with this stuff.
Well, Masumi-chan is *so* "gay" that he is not really gay anymore...but that it is slapstick and can't be anything else. I would not say he is abnormal..it is overdone, yes...but not really abnormal. The only problem I could find is that there seem to be no "normal" gay people in Japanese media (at least in what I watch/read) They all tend to be a overdone stereotype. But I still find him funny...despite having gay friends (who btw would NEVER behave like that lol) |
Masami is normal....all gay people in Japan have afros and moustaches...I thought everybody knew that.

Just joking of course.....but yeah your point is well taken...most gay characters portrayed in Japanese TV are overly caricaturized. Several dramas come to mind. Obviously there is some cultural bias in popular entertainment regarding the issue in Japan.
"Dare yori mo mama wo aisu" deals with the issue to some extent.

Well, what comes into my mind next is Shou in Battle Royale- quite a bit in the novel and very much in the manga. He looks more like a drag queen than some gay youth in the manga |
The gay characters in dramas are often drag queens...it seems they are either gay bishounen or drag queens...there's no middle category.

Ah yes.
One of the very few (only?) dramas I've seen that are more serious in handling the gay issue...

Oh you saw that one? I didn't like it much...but not because of the gay issue which was handled in a rather novel fasion but the whole thing a bit dry....and the acting seemed a little contrived for me.
Tamura Masakazu...the father is one of Japan's most prolific actors...he's had much better roles.

It was inconsistent at times, but it was an okay drama... I liked Uchida Yuki's tomboyish character...

Yup, straight from the manga.
You can never say "never" about a Season 2, but I think Juri-chan and Hiroshi-kun want to move on with their careers... Even though everyone loves their two characters...

Seems like her normal 'do is Nodame-like, less the few strands that adorably curl out and up... (see signature... )
