I think the general message came a bit early on in the movie, being the whole "do what you can at the moment" thing. That being said, the cat angle of it was conveyed sort of poorly, to the point where you can probably cut it out and have the movie make more sense.
I agree, though, it was sort of a mess storyline-wise.
Paul Weinberg's parts were REALLY odd, though.

It didn't help that his voice (and appearance, for the most part) was rather grating...
