Kawaii dake ja dame kashira? [可愛いだけじゃダメかしら?]
Rating: 9/10 (Bought & Watched)
Any series with 'cute' in the title and Kanako Enomoto in a leading role is going to be worth watching. 'Kawaii dake' certainly lived up to my expectations. Several of its stars have worked together before on other dramas and I'm sure this helped to make it a success. My respect and admiration for Kanako's talent was greatly increased. She's always gorgeous to look at, but she's also a terrific actress and her performance here could be envied by actresses twice her age. Remember that she was only 18 years old when this series appeared.

She's cute enough for me! [Rating: 8/10]
Kanako Enomoto gives a terrific performance for an 18-year-old. She really gets inside her character Yuko and brings her to life superbly. Her acting shows up best in the more dramatic scenes. I think her finest moment is when Yuko has to give a speech at her best friend's wedding, but is so overcome by emotion that she can hardly speak at all. Kanako plays this scene brilliantly with brimming eyes, sobs and trembling lips to really show us the feelings that would have been racing through Yuko's mind at such a time. The series is probably 2 or 3 episodes too long, and I didn't see the point of having the characters in 'Kawaii Dake' watch video clips of the actors who play them in an earlier series, 'Otonashi Karen-san' from 1998. Who was supposed to be who during the screening of these excerpts? On this evidence Kanako is much more than just a pretty face. She's certainly that, of course! But Kanako is also a really talented young actress and I'd very much like to see her tackle something more challenging.
