Gokusen [ごくせん]
Another Classic [Rating: 9/10]
Acting and Characters are amazing! Not an either-or with GTO--it has its own distinct feel.
GTO [麻辣教師]
Watch this drama!!! [Rating: 10/10]
The greatest! What got me hooked on Jdoramas in the first place... A must-see!
Hanazakari no Kimitachi e [花ざかりの君たちへ]
Win! [Rating: 10/10]
I love this drama! Very funny and a bit crazy with some serious bits in between! Watch it!
Ichi Ritoru no Namida [1リットルの涙]
1 Liter of Tears... [Rating: 10/10]
...is how much you will cry watching this drama. I think I cried at least once every episode. But it's really amazing, even if I felt a bit disillusioned about how Japanese treat the disabled.
Iryu [医龍 Team Medical Dragon]
܂܂ [Rating: 7/10]
I watched the whole thing but... it was so medically unrealistic (perhaps to be expected of a jdorama). Asada is the GTO/Western hero of Japanese medical dramas, which is as epic as it is unbelievable. Conclusion: try it out. :)
Kamisama mou sukoshi dake [神様、もう少しだけ]
Meh [Rating: 3/10]
Masaki is the most whiny, idiotic, obnoxious main character ever, which pretty much ruined this drama for me. The plot didn't make much sense either. I watched the whole thing but I really don't know why...
Kimi wa Petto [きみはペット]
Great drama! [Rating: 9/10]
I really liked this drama. I think the characters had a lot of depth ("Momo" is not just a stay-at-home pet, which would probably be rather creepy...) Also, there's Matsumoto Jun.
Kou Kou Kyoushi 2003 [高校教師 2003]
Good but disturbing [Rating: 6/10]
I watched the whole thing and I liked it well enough, but I couldn't get past the age gap and all the lying. Psychologically interesting perhaps, but overall a bit messed up. I really like the main actor, though.
My Boss, My Hero [マイボスマイヒロ]
Very funny [Rating: 8/10]
And definitely worth watching
Ninkyo Helper [任侠ヘルパー]
Chivalry is (not) dead? [Rating: 8/10]
Such an odd combination-yakuza and the elderly-with surprisingly good results (I watched the whole thing in one day). It can be funny as tough yakuza try to deal with difficult elderly people, but it touches on some deep and troublesome issues related to aging in Japan. Hikoichi takes a few episodes to get to know and like, though he never quite loses his attitude, so no unrealistic character changes there. Also includes: determined elementary school boy, high power business woman with a secret, powerful female yakuza, and a bunch of troublesome elderly people going about their lives in a care facility. And an odd theme of "chivalry." Note: I would recommend a tiny bit of research on yakuza to help understand gang structure, names, "ninkyo" (chivalry), etc.
Osen [おせん]
Oishisou! [Rating: 9/10]
Another drama where you really root for the characters. The main character can be a bit of a drag in the place, but Osen-san is awesome! Also, the food looks amazing. I have never craved a plain onigiri so much as when I was watching this show!
Yamada Taro Monogatari [山田太郎ものがたり]
An-chan! [Rating: 10/10]
I found this to be a really heartfelt drama that is totally underrated on this site. Tarou, the big brother, struggles to provide for his extremely poor family (a bit exaggerated, I admit, but his siblings are SO CUTE!!!) You can't help but cheer him on. And the whole supermarket thing is pretty hilarious...
Zettai Kareshi [絶対彼氏]
Zettai dame [Rating: 3/10]
I really don't get the hype about this drama. Not only is it completely unrealistic, but I didn't really feel sympathy toward any of the characters. Riko is a shallow, 1-dimensional character, and the idea of falling in love with a robot because he is helplessly devoted to her is fairly creepy. I know I watched at least half of it, but it was so slow and the characters were so frustrating that I don't think I managed to finish it.
