Just watched the episode premiere. the line is not tagalog and it's not matsumoto's voice.

from what I can pick up, it was "fuiripin (philippine) yarou wa yo!". The "yarou wa yo!" part sounded like "hindi ako, kayo" Sweat

I'm not gonna be translating the words cuz it might spoil the series for some of you. (well, my japanese is conversational at best)

This dorama hit me deep personally because I am a Fil-Jap halvsie myself. one time a salaryman ojisan shouted at me with the words "Kaero! baka gajin, kusee!" (Go home, stupid foreigner! Sh!t!)). They've also stopped me at train stations to inspect if I have a valid alien registration card even though my nationality is Japanese. I hope this drama shows that mixed raced japanese exist in Japan's so called Homogeneous society and that like them, We have dreams too.

Sorry for the speech (or rant) as my first post. Can't help, almost teared up watching the first episode. highly recommended.

^ Thank you for the comment w00t!
Now I can't wait to watch this. It is very interesting to make the very Japanese Jun Matsumoto into a Fil-Jap. The Japanese audience will be forced to adjust to his mixed race and maybe finally can understand what it is like to face prejudice in their own country.

imho, it was really brave for Matsumoto, considered an "elite" amongst all the Johnny's top idol, to take on this role. FAITO! Jun-kun! Mr Green

I'm not too sure if Johnny's artist really had a say to pick and choose their roles but I'm glad Jun agree to act as Bito. Maybe it's a way for him to understand his gaijin fans Smile

you made me so excited to watch this drama... its interesting to know that its all about opening the eyes of the Japanese on this issue.
i hope this drama helps on stopping (or at least lessening) that idea on some Japanese people

I thought the first ep was decent. One of my neighbors is married to a Filipino. Their kids are good looking and they look Okinawan.

2ch blabbered about hating the show, blaming it as a too heavy drama for the recession and "unrealistic" plot. Way to go Japan :|
I managed to catch a first quarter of the pilot.

Even if this drama won't get the support of the Japanese audience, it still is a big step for them to showcase the ugliness of Japanese culture and system towards "foreigners" in a popular medium. Good Luck Smile! Big Grin

will someone be providing softsubs for this??
i just watched it raw..and even though i barely understood, i must say that it was really an interesting drama..can't help but feel pity towards Bito..honestly i was teary seeing the last part.. Puppy Dog Eyes
i just noticed that the other characters in the drama [except for Hana of course.. Beaten ] only calls Bito as "Bito"..without any honorifics added..does that have something to do with him being a gaijin too??
about Jun's acting..i think it was OK except for the crying scene..it looks forced to me.. Sweat
but nevertheless, his smile makes up for it.. Mr Green Victory! Peace!
looking forward to the next episode!!
Shun looks smexy hot as a bad boy on the preview btw.. hehe

I just watched the first episode. It was a pretty decent episode. For those living in Japan, does such racist behaviour happen often and openly?Does the general public show disgust to such racist behaviour?

If such things happen openly and people don't think much about it,then I'm disgusted, because it would mean that the Japanese mindset hasn't changed since WWII.

they associate foreigners with crime so they dont want them residing in Japan. About the abuse he deals with, i would assume thats quite common. My japanese professor worked overseas at a medical university and she said before the semester started they had a meeting to tell all the professors about the students that were not of complete japanese heritage and they did this so that the teachers could be a bit cautious of those students because the Japanese have a general mistrust of non-Japanese (it doesnt matter if you are born and raised there and only speak Japanese).

Any other interesting facts or personal experience to share anyone?

^ Are such suspicions only reserved for all foreigners or is it only for those of a certain colour of skin? From what I know, well it may just be ignorance on my part, the Japanese seem to like or rather look up to caucasians.

That would be off-topic.

There's very likely a thread regarding this subject in the General Discussion forum.

It's not since it would help understand the theme of the drama itself especially on situations and difficulties faced by the main character Bito. Since the Japanese people at 2ch have been complaining about the drama 'unrealistic' plot, as an audience who has no experience living in Japan, I would like to know if the same situation does actually happen or is it generally accepted there.
