For those of you that has a fairly common English/American name, here is a rough guide in what you name is like in hiragana (Ђ炪ȁj. For those with more ethic names, you'll just have to use the Hiragana Table.Peace!

Foreign names are usually written in katagana, not hiragana~

However, Japanese names are usually represented in hiragana and kanji. However, there are exception to katagana letters for names.

Actually, i was thinking of that when i posted the link, but i also was thinking that in JPN, hiragana is first taught to toddlers, essentially, the first written language, before katakana and kanji. If one would read some kids book there is even hiragana next to the katakana (so kids would know how to read the katakana), so i thought that sharing the link was appropriate. There was some people that had posted (i forgot where, but somewhere here) to the effect of "Can you write my name in JPNese?" so that link would satisfy their want. I hope I didn't mislead anyone to thinking that their name are usually written in hiragana. It's usually in katakana.

really? my japanese professor told me that KATAKANA is taught to children first because its simple and straight lines...and children's motor skills have not fully developed yet...so they hold out on teaching hiragana until like 2-3 grade beause it is more complex and 'wavey' that what she tols us...which i tought was weird..... but i dunno what's what now! Nut Crazy Crazy

I think it does not matter what type that children learns first or second; the important thing about names is still the children in Japan would have hiragana representation for their kanji names anyways.

For example,

let's take Kimura Takuya-> it would have kanji representation, but can be translated in hiragana as well. Nowadays, people are mixing up katagana so that's why his name is written "KiMuTaKu" shorthanded in katagana in newspaper.

Or in usual case,

Matsu Takako, same thing here, kanji to hiragana translation.

Therefore, who care what the children learns what first; but I'm not Japanese so I don't kno what they learn first. I'll come back to post what they learn first from my Japanese friends~!

You are right that the hiragana represents the kanji, that's the reason why the JPN kids learn hiragana first for the phonical sounds. The kanji (as most of us know) is too hard for the youngsters. Like I said, that's why most/all kid's book are written in hiragana so they can have a sense of how to read, if not the meaning than at least the phonics.

I think Nico is right. Hiragana is taught first, at least on my own experience. I am not a Japanese but I went through formal Nihongo lessons and our first lesson was the Hiragana. Katakana came a little bit later. Some text (esp hard Kanji and even some Katakana) have what they call "Furigana" - that's the text (usually above the Kanji or Katakana word) denoting the reading in Hiragana. I think this was mentioned in some earlier post also Smile
