Hmm... maybe I understand it the wrong way but from what you said, Odoru Daisousasen sounds like something serious without being watered down by comedy. If that is the case, then it's in the same wavelength of my favourites (Life and Karei naru Ichizoku). A few reviews in this site did mention some funnies though it ought to be tolerable if kept as minimal as in Ichi Ritoru.
I'll take a peek at crunchymunchy if it's in there somewhere. Maybe Proposal Daisakusen too if the 1st episode is also there. I have a long shopping list already and it's the middle of the month. But considering I may not find a few of the old ones, I just might add a couple more to the cart.
A question: Is the female character in Proposal Daisakusen "strange"? Not necessarily as strange as the autistic character in Kimi ga oshiete kureta koto (though I'd like it more if it does. 50 First Dates = great!). Just, sort of uncommon (like Minami in Long Vacation or Yada Akiko's character in Last Christmas). Not saying that I wouldn't like it if it's not. Just that, when it comes to love story, I prefer uncommon over typical girls (there are already a lot of them in real-life! :D).
And speaking about that, that baka girl in Itazura na Kiss seems interesting to watch. Stone age drama though.

The comedy in Odoru Daisousasen is part of what makes it a great series. It's not something that needs to be tolerated I don't think. But I guess everyone has a different preferences and sense of humour. And it's difficult to appreciate the greatness of this series in the first episode. Personally, it took me 3 or 4 episodes to realize how good it really is, so I would recommend that you give it a bit more time before deciding.
Rei in ProDai is pretty normal, common, girl next door type of character I guess.

Ehhh...it's more comedic than serious really, but when it's time to get serious, it does it extremely well due to the connection you make with the characters. As xploring mentioned, as opposed to Proposal Daisakusen, give it a few episodes to catch ahold because it does need to warm up. This isn't something like, say, Security Police, where the comedy is completely out of place and it tries to take itself TOO seriously.

I know ProDai is on there, since I watched it for a second time on there while at work (got HD versions at home).

Well the girl isn't strange by definition really...it's more focused on the guy's quirks (namely, his inability to properly express his feelings to her despite knowing what's going to happen). In essence, she's the "girl next door" type that has been friends with the main character for a long time, so they have in-jokes but nothing too..."unique"...if you want to call it that.
However, the main girl's best friend is by all means a priss (Miss Popular if you would like to stereotype it) and she makes up for this weirdness. She actually has a prominent role in the SP too, making it complex in it's own right.
Again, I'm horrible with descriptions without giving away the story, but like I said the first episode IS online so you can check it out there.

Just finished sneak-peeking it at Cpt. Crunch.
Odoru Daisousasen
Watched the 1st episode. The form is pretty much on the fence. Followed with 2nd episode, just in case the drama only picks up then. But sorry to say that it's still a tad opposite of what I'm looking for. Trying to be goofy but not really goofy, serious but not really serious, real but not really real, a detective but not really a detective, run of the mill but not really such. I'm not really sure what to make of it. The only thing that interests me was Sumire's past. And she seems like the uncommon type.
I'll take the good advice and give the 3rd & 4th episode a whirl right after this post. Sorta miss Sumire... ^_^
Proposal Daisakusen
I watched the 1st episode and I kinda get to guess why some people wanted to break things. Pity. It's one of the sweet fantasies. It's a shame to be shattered by pragmatism. Though there's the SP, it only makes up for the ending, right? If the rest of the episodes are as the 1st, then I really need to be mentally prepared.
Oh, Eri reminds me of sunshine. :o)
Okie, I'm off to watch Odoru Daisousasen.
Thanks for the recommendations. Also, thanks for bearing with me and my wierd taste (I took a look at the music thread and realized my taste is much much more out of the box).

That's the weird thing about the show. It starts off slow and, by the time it gets to the end...you just HAVE to know what happens next to these characters. It makes the entire story about the characters and not the plot honestly. Sumire's story gets interesting later on, but I won't spoil it.

The SP does more than make up for the ending (which really wasn't that bad of an ending), moreso it actually continues right where the ending left off and expands on backstory. I would say it compliments it (not unlike the Bayside Shakedown movies did for Odoru, which I do recommend to check out after watching the series).

Guys, you're both dead on. Odoru Daisousasen really starts to pick up at 3rd episode and steadily reeled me in with episode 4. Yeah a bit slow I reckon but some long-awaited stuffs happened in episode 3. One for my wishlist nevertheless
xoxsunnydelight, I'm not a vet in jdorama but I'd like to recommend
OK, others have commented on how much they enjoyed Asakusa Fukumaru Ryokan. Having just finished it, I too enjoyed it a lot (thanks for getting it for me, bmwracer).
I'm recommending it, not because it's a great dorama (it isn't) but because it's an opportunity to see the enormously talented Toshiyuki Nishida do what he's been doing for a long long time--make audiences laugh, make audiences cry, and entertain them every step of the way.
I daresay most of the members of this site probably don't even know who he is, given the fact that he's over 60 and has a face and figure only a mother would love.
But he's a big star in Japan--immensely popular, especially among middle-aged and older audiences, and immensely successful (many of his movies have been commercial and criticial hits, plus he's been in something like 10 or 11 of NHK's yearlong Taiga series).
I'm also recommending this series because you also get to see wonderful veteran character actors like Ikkei Watanabe and Takehiko Ono as part of the regular cast, or another excellent veteran character actor like Maeda Gin in a guest role.
But the number one reason to see it is to be entertained by Nishida.

Well, not exactly 'romance inspirational,' but can't go wrong with GTO if you haven't checked it out yet. Could also try Iryu 1 & 2 if you don't mind the fact the medical fact is nowhere near accurate.
For 'romance inspirational'...hmmm...well, Last Christmas isn't on your list, and that one's kinda 'inspirational' I guess. I dunno, I'm going to have to see what you get from other users, heh.

Long Vacation definitely, and maybe Beautiful Life... I can only think of these obvious ones...
Majo no jouken, Kamisama mou sukoshi dake? These are rather heavy. There are inspirational elements, but it's probably not the main emphasis of the story.
If it is inspirational without much romance, there are a lot of them. Pretty much all the sports drama are supposed to be inspirational in some ways. Waterboys, Gambatte Ikkimasshoi...
And One Litre of Tears if you haven't seen it already. Absolute tearjerker though.
