Hmmm, ok, I just finished watching Love Complex. Interesting show... I do find myself disagreeing with many on the fact that it is a show to avoid. I really enjoyed it for many reasons, but mostly because of the SPECTACULAR acting skills demostrated by most of the characters. Especially Sorimachi Takashi, Karasawa Toshiaki, and Kimura Yoshino. All have proved many times that they can be versatile actor(ess)s. But I ramble, to the point.

Even though I speak Japanese, the ending of Love Complex is throwing me of completely. I KINDA understand why Ayumu threw himself out the window, but not completely. I'm going on the theory that Goh was the devil (what a FREAKY face in the end!) and Ayumu was Jesus to a certain extent. Or was Goh Jesus because of the way the last picture of him was shot... And what was Goh's identity...? My VCD was skipping badly at the part where they discover his identity, I know he's an elite, but what kind?

If someone could help me understand this complex drama I'd appreciate it!

Btw, for some reason this forum isn't displaying my name, but this is Eyrien.

I am so relieved that someone shares my discomfort over the ending of Love Complex! Honestly, this is one show that really intrigues.

I'm not a Christian, and don't read much on the topic,so wth regards to Eyrien's theory, I can't contribute much. Though the part I can agree on, is, if Sorimachi was meant to symbolise Jesus, it does make his sacrifice easier to explain - because after his death, the rest came to be relieved of their pain. Which makes him a parallel to Jesus, in a way.

I wondered WHY Sorimachi and Karasawa had to kiss after the fight which, incidentally, went on for an abnormally long time. The only reason I could generate was that it ties in with the title Love Complex, and the moment of touch between the male leads was the sublimation of what one calls love, which has been examined in all its many facets throughout the whole show. I mean, there was blind love for one's father/ a mother's overpossessive love, lesbianism, etc. I can only surmise that the scriptwriter wanted to portray at the final moment another love that could transcend all.
I think we should really discuss more of this, man. It's very exciting to talk about!
Maybe this is the lazy way out, but for all you know there cld be Love Complex 2! THAT would make things so much easier....!

This is Eyrien again...

Hmm, actually I'm not Christian either, so I have to no clue whether or not my theory is plausible or not. It's just a guess, from the way that last shot of Goh, where it looks he's been crucified.

I wondered about that kiss as well (probably one of the longest I've ever seen Sorimachi give in all of his dramas!) My conclusion was this: that if my theory is correct and Goh was the devil, then Ayumu kissed Goh to show his compassion for Goh, to break through his icy personality. If you notice, even though Goh had all of those affairs, he never demostrated on ounce of true compassion, not even when he saved "Ryo" from that cult.

When I first saw that kiss, I was like "Woah! Maybe Ayumu's mother doesn't have to worry about him getting a girlfriend!" But, given some time to think it over, I don't think the director was trying to show gay love. I think that Ayumu loved EVERYONE, but not in a romantic type of way. I think that kiss was a much more dramatic way of showing that compassion Ayumu has, a lot better than him saying something like "I love you, all of you, man!"

It really is an interesting topic. I realized at the very end that I actually had no clue what the director was trying to show throughout Love Complex. It made me want to watch the show over, just to see if I find a deeper meaning the director was aiming for earlier on. For that reason, I think is drama is excellent.

I don't know about Love Complex 2... It's pretty hard to follow up this drama...

i share in all of your confusion with this one. this drama aired quite a while ago down here in the haven of all subtitled dramas (hawaii), but i still haven't figured out what the ending truly means. overall, not only the ending, but this entire drama was confusing. i think i'll watch the final episode one more time to give what my interpretation of what i think the ending means.

Some people commented that this drama symbolizes the chaotic Corporate world of Japan. In fact, it is actually the opposite, the problems, chaos in a corporation about to decease symbolizes, in the drama, the mind of a human being, which is also composed of thousand and millions of "employees" - memories, thoughts, hope or lack of. It is the destruction of such components that lead each character to their mental breakdown. There is the inability to face a father's death, fatal obsession over weight loss, hatred steming from a lover's betrayal, etc. Everyone pretends to be normal, like the company in the drama, they hide their problems (like the stealing issue in the company) and expect everything to be fine. However, once a "virus" enters, the company structure/the human mind built on self-denial crumbles. This drama is excellent in the fact that it represents such change of emotions by utilizing humor in the beginning and chaotic even psychotic breakdown in the later half. The viewer experiences the same thing as the characters, and that is why many viewers will feel uncomfortable, disturbed. That is what is intended.

EXPLANATION OF THE CONVOLUTED ENDING AND WHO KARASAWA IS
About the ending, Sorimachi jumped out of the window after kissing Karasawa, seemingly draining the "undying virus" (represented by the transfer of the blue eyes) from him. He dies to kill that "virus" he has taken upon himself. This death is more symbolic. The virus represents human complexes - a trauma, a fear, a hatred, etc. poisons resulting from life's changes. It is what corrupts everyone's life. Karasawa, even though being the physical representation of the virus, is in fact a victim as well. From the minimal info revealed, he is the illegitamate son of a powerful politician, born from a mistress. He himself carries such virus or complex, so strong that he seeks destruction to end all misery. If you notice, when Sorimachi jumps out of the window, a drop of tear came out of Karasawa's corpse - he has been released as well.

This drama is a dark comedy, a psychological thriller, an unexplainable success. It is disturbing, mind-bending, and maddening, rightfully so. If you are up for the challenge, watch it and try to comprehend it, it is well worth the chaos.

Glad you guys liked my explanation.

I am a writer and pseudo philosopher myself, that's why I can pick up on these things easily. If any of you are interested in watching similar themed movies, I recommend Mulholland Drive (an American movie), just be prepared to be VERY disturbed.

My opinion on Mulholland Drive huh? I did watch it a long time ago, but I still remember the disturbing themes quite well, who wouldn't?

SPOILER for Mulholland Drive

The movie surprises the viewers because in the end, it turns out that what was conceived as truth from almost the entire movie is merely fabrications or perhaps hallucinations of the blond actress girl. Everything from her meeting the dark femme fatale, to all her (dark hair) mysteries were all her (blond) fantasies. Where did they come from? Her failed hollywood dream, her obsession over the dark hair woman - unachieved. Again, that "truth" part of the movie was the insanity inside her mind, the viewer experiences along with her.

Now the most freaky part of the movie, the laughing old couple and the demonic man. Remember how the old couple were laughing at the beginning when she met them at the airport, they were all very happy, at that time, they represent her hopeful dream to become a movie star - they were her hollywood dream - the old American dream. The demonic man represents destruction, insanity, what she fears the most. The fact that in the end the two old couple came out of the demon laughing and trying to catch her - she is being haunted by her own dreams. Her mind destroyed by the very ambition her hope was built on. Mullholland drive exists in Hollywood, the title hints at the age old American dream of becoming a movie star. She (blond) does act in a movie, except it is the psychotic nightmare in her mind.

This is the vague idea I have after seeing the movie once (and the last time), never really tried to hard to explore everything (just thinking about it gives me goose bumps), this movie reallly really freaks me out, errrrrrr.

I wouldn't say it's poorly done. For a TV dorama, I think it's very well beyond its expectation. What other dorama actually disturb or make you think soooo much? Plus, do not forget it is a Japanese dorama and the ending just screams Japanese. What I like most about this drama is the subtlety with the plot, nothing is explained too explicitly.

I just love Karasawa Toshiaki. I think he's just so good looking and a great actor. Eventhough he's much older than a lot of the Dorama now but his charms do not diminish.
But I could never figure out exactly what happened in 'Love Complex'. Is he the devil? a mad man? Could someone please explain the last few episodes of Love Complex to me?
P.S. Just watched Oishii Kankei this weekend again and just LOVED, LOVED Karasawa Toshiaki!!!
