The topic and the content are totally irrelevant. If you'd like to know more about Japanese culture, I highly suggest readin travel and Japanese culture books and of course lookin for decent Japan info sites.

Some useful links regardin Japan and its culture:
http://www.infohub.com/TravelGuide/TRAVELLER/ASIA/japan.html
http://www.travel-library.com/asia/japan/
http://www.tcvb.or.jp/tour.html

http://www.nt2099.com/J-ENT/index2.html
http://www.jinjapan.org/trends/index.html
http://www.realjapan.net/02/

Btw the topic could be renamed and moved to the other section.

Can someone list all the dialects of Japan? And I was watching a movie, and one of the characters says that in Okinawa they believe that men comes from a woman's rib, can someone confirm this? Thanks.

I'm sorry that I don't know enough about Okinawa creation myths to answer your second question.

But the answer to your first question is, "no."

The problem is that Japan used to be a society where leaving your home was forbidden to anyone without permits, and that kind of (even partial) isolation leads to every community developing its own distinctive regional dialect.

For example, I once visited a friend's family in Yonezawa. My friend's grandfather spoke Yonezawa-ben (dialect) which was a variation on the Yamagata dialect, which itself is a subset of the Touhoku dialect. But Yonezawa residents are quite proud of their dialect, and although the rest of my friend's family tried to speak something close to Tokyo dialect to me (so I could understand them), they were all very proud that the grandfather's dialect was strictly Yonezawa-ben and nothing else. And Japan is riddled with towns like Yonezawa.

Of course there are social class, gender, ethnic, and other dialects as well.

A list, even for a linguist studying Japanese, would probably be very problematic and a waste of time. You might as well just list all of the towns in Japan.
