Overlooked with all the hype (much deserved) about Vin Scully's retirement is that Dick Enberg also retired from broadcasting this past weekend. In recent years he had done the TV broadcasts for the San Diego Padres, but in his long and illustrious career, he was a jack-of-all-trades when it came to doing play-by-play, both on radio and TV. At one time, he was the most omnipresent sports broadcaster on TV. Back in the 60's when my family moved to the L.A. area, there was Vin Scully with the Dodgers, Chick Hearn with the Lakers, and Dick Enberg doing UCLA basketball, Rams football, and Angels baseball. Talk about being spoiled!

For the first time since 1946, Cubs fans can say their team has been to the World Series more recently than Dodger fans can.
I have no dog in this fight. Obviously the Cubs are sentimental favorites but Terry Francona is pretty good manager, he's been thru this before with Boston so I wouldn't write them off completely.
If their football team could get its act together, we might be calling Cleveland "City of Champions".

On October 14, 1908 the Chicago Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers becoming the first team to repeat as World Series Champions.
39,466 days later they win their third World Series.
Patience is a virtue.
On the local news they were showing some Cubs fans watching the game at a sports bar over in Burbank. One guy brought his glove. That would have to be one helluva of foul ball.

There's this page on Facebook about baseball that I follow. They're talking about the Dodgers trading Pedro Martinez to Montreal for Delino DeShields. Somebody posted this (and yes, he left caps lock on)

Friend flushes baseball fan's remains down ballpark toilets
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City man is on a mission to flush the cremated remains of his lifelong friend — a plumber — down ballpark toilets around the country.
Tom McDonald tells The New York Times that it�fs a fitting tribute for Roy Riegel.
The two baseball fans were childhood friends in Queens, not far from — wait for it — Flushing Meadows, where the Mets play.
Like baseball, this endeavor has rules. The game has to be in progress when McDonald sprinkles the ashes into the toilet from a little plastic bottle.
So far, he�fs done the deed at 16 stadiums.
Riegel also was a music fan: In Cleveland, McDonald flushed ashes at both Progressive Field and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
In Chicago, McDonald did his duty at a White Sox game, skipping Wrigley Field because the Cubs are longtime rivals of the Mets.
�gI know people might think it�fs weird, and if it were anyone else�fs ashes, I�fd agree,�h McDonald said. �gBut for Roy, this is the perfect tribute to a plumber and a baseball fan and just a brilliant, wild guy.�h
Riegel�fs family agreed to share a portion of the ashes after his death in 2008. McDonald spoons out a little each time, from an old peanut can, wrapped in Mets ticket stubs, that he keeps next to World Series highlight videos and his collection of 149 baseball Hall of Fame autographs.
Hank Riegel, of Waterloo, New York, said his brother would appreciate the offbeat gesture.
�gHe�fd be like, �eOh, yeah, do that,�f�h Riegel said. �gHe would definitely approve of it. Never once did Roy follow the rules.�h
McDonald has enough ashes left for one more tribute. He hopes to do it at Durham Athletic Park in North Carolina, where the 1988 movie �gBull Durham�h was filmed.

Dodgers acquire Yu Darvish from Rangers
The Los Angeles Dodgers, owners of the best record in baseball, have acquired right-hander Yu Darvish from the Texas Rangers, the teams announced Monday.
Los Angeles landed perhaps the biggest name available right at the trade deadline. The Rangers will receive three minor leaguers: second baseman Willie Calhoun, right-hander A.J. Alexy and shortstop Brendon Davis. They are the fourth-, 17th- and 27th-ranked prospects in the Dodgers' system, respectively, according to MLB.com.
Los Angeles did not want to part with top prospects like right-hander Walker Buehler and outfielder Alex Verdugo.
"It's an honor to be wanted by the team," Darvish, who is from Japan, said through a translator.
The trade came after the Dodgers acquired left-handed relievers Tony Watson from the Pirates and Tony Cingrani from the Reds.
Darvish is 6-9 with a 4.01 ERA his season, his worst in five years in the majors. A four-time All-Star, Darvish has seen his win total decrease in each season in the league -- from 16 in 2012 to seven last season. Tommy John surgery cost him the entire 2015 season.
Darvish, 30, is 0-5 with a 5.81 ERA over his past eight starts. He was tagged for a career-worst 10 runs in his last outing, and later revealed that he was tipping his pitches to the Marlins.
"I was mentally prepared for the announcement," Darvish said of the trade rumors.
At Globe Life Park, where the struggling Rangers were set to host Seattle, Darvish said he had "nothing but appreciation" for his time in Texas.
Darvish can become a free agent after this season. Asked whether he would consider a return to the Rangers, he said he would have to wait and see.
