Watched this drama up to eps 6. Definately an underrated drama. Probably just as good or better than Ichi Ritoru no Namida. Love the original storyline. Didn't think I like this drama because casts composed largely of the elderly & yutaka (not really a fan of him) boy was I wrong. Can't wait till eps 7 and later to be released.

I've just started watching this drama and I think it's pretty good. I was interesting in it because I've watched 1 litre of tears, and Riko is there too.

That girl is pretty talented. Great at playing a bratty kid, a sweet kid, and mature kid and only 14 years old. When I saw 1 Litre Tears I thought she was 18-19.

I just finished watching this show. Enjoyed it very much. Would like to know the name of the actor who acted as Kawashima's (Takenouchi) friend in Tokyo. Cos he kind of look familiar. Thanks.

And its nice to know that there's a special for this show. Wondering whether Takenouchi is in it as his name is not listed on the cast for the special and there's only his name without picture on the cast chart on the Ruri site...

Ruri finds love in island drama
Tsuyoshi Matsuzaki / Yomiuri Shimbun

NTV's drama Ruri no Shima, which focuses on the life of an abandoned Tokyo girl who is sent to a small island in Okinawa Prefecture by the child-care authorities, returns to screens tonight with a two-hour special depicting the heroine's early adolescence.

Based on the novel, Kogoi: Okinawa Koto no Saigetsu by Katsu Moriguchi, Ruri no Shima (Jan. 6, 9 p.m., NTV network), the first series of which aired two years ago, depicts the lives of people on the remote island. The actual location used is Hatomajima island, 500 kilometers west of the main island of Okinawa Prefecture.

Hatomajima is surrounded by beautiful coral reefs and has a circumference of just four kilometers and a population of 60. As part of efforts to halt depopulation, the islanders started taking care of children from other regions in order to keep the island's primary and middle schools in operation.

In the story of Ruri no Shima, heroine Ruri (Riko Narumi) is one of the children accepted by one of the local schools. An abandoned child taken into care by child welfare services in Tokyo, she is taken to the island when she is a sixth-grade primary school student to live with a local couple--Yuzo (Ken Ogata) and Megumi (Mitsuko Baisho).

Click on button to reveal/hide spoiler:

Observing the filming on the island, the author of the novel said: "On isolated islands, people can't live without maintaining good human relationships. I'm happy that the [TV] drama shows this reality, depicting what daily life is really like."

Producer Kazuya Toda already had the idea of producing a special on the character's early adolescence when he was working on the 2005 series.

"I want to keep on tracing the important turning points of Ruri's life in future shows," he said.
