Thanks for all your suggestions! I've already tried Kimmi Wa Petto and Hana Kimi this week, and loved both of them, and I'm downloading the rest. More suggestions are always welcome!

Nodame Cantabile?
The second criterion makes it very tough to recommend anything...
Sorry, I probably was asking too much but It doesnt have to be as good or better than my boss my hero since thats already an awesome jdorama so it probably is hard to find something similar or better.
That said I am kinda new to jdorama so I will have to listen to advise from those who've seen alot more.
Just to let you know what i've seen already.
Nodame, GTO, Gokusen, Hana Yori Dango and My boss my hero.

I think the "recently made" request is laughable... I suppose if it's older than five years or so, it's unwatchable.
Like I said I'll try anything similar, if its really old but a classic then ill still give it a go. Im here to get advice not to step on anyone's toes with my specific requests. We all here to enjoy jdorama are we not.

I think some of the recommendations given above may satsify your requests...although I can appreciate your desire to see more recent doramas when you feel up to it you should try to watch some of the older shows, many will agree with me, they are in many ways better than much of what's been on Japanese TV in recent years.
Edit: My recommendation, although not a school dorama, would be for you to watch Kekkon Dekinai Otoko....male lead, recently made, hilarious, won many awards including best dorama, best actor, and best actress.

I'd say the 'Golden Years of Drama' would probably be 97-98 IMHO. We had great shows like Odoru Daisousasen, Great Teacher Onizuka, Psychometrer Eiji, Beach Boys...I could go on, but there were a lot.

No offense, but unless you're familiar with dorama from previous decades, I don't know how you could say this particular block of time would be the "Golden Years of Drama." (if you are well acquainted with dorama from previous eras, I apologize for my preceding remark)
Entirely reasonable to judge that block of time as being the best as it reflects your dorama viewing experience which is what I think you're trying to say.
It is unfortunate that more dorama of all types--primetime, Asadora, and Taiga-- from earlier time periods are not readily available to those of us in the West.
I've seen four dorama from the 1980's and two from the 1970's, and all of them I would personally rate as being very good to great.
And based on the many fine dorama I've seen from the 1990's, that must have been an extremely good decade as well for quality shows. But even the many 90's series we in the West have access to are really only a small percentage of what was produced during that decade.
No question in my mind we are missing out on a lot of terrific series from the previous century.

I think you just basically described what's exactly in Nobuta wo Produce, so if you haven't seen that one, check it out.

Most of these are in the mystery/thriller genre, some are cop dramas, but hopefully you find what you're looking for:
~ Unfair (cop/mystery)
...
~ Chakushin Ari (supernatural thriller like the Ring)
During last week, we watched the CHAKUSHIN ARI drama as bedtime story, well not that good idea especially if you use a cell phone as an alarm clock...
Very nice one, liked UNFAIR too, so please more of that kind...

Glad you liked those dramas. And I did mention that Chakushin Ari is like Ringu, so that should have warned you not to watch it late at night. I wanted to get that ringtone for my phone, but at the same time, I didn't want to freak myself out every time it rang.

hello everyone,
im really into jdoramas and i love almost all of them that i watched......i dont regret watching any of those great series
my very first jdorama was Hanazakari no Kimitachi e and i fell in love wit it from the very beginning......it has everything i longed for(fun, love,a little of drama, quite good plot)-horikita,shun and ikuta were awesome as well as the rest of actors )
then i discovered Hana Yori Dango (thanks to Oguri Shun),
First Kiss(story about young girl with serious disease but it has happyending ),
Gokusen(season 1 starring Jun Matsumoto,Oguri Shun; season 2 wit Kamenashi Kazuya and Jin Akanishi),
Nobuta wo produce (high school-although i think it could be better, its still good drama worth watching again wit Kamenashi,Yamashita Tomohisa from NEWS and Horikita Maki),
Nodame Cantabile(really lovely serie full of music, hilarious situations and i guarantee you will take a fancy to the very untypical and sweet relationship between two main characters ),
Tatta Hitotsu No Koi (Kamenashi Kazuya......i wont say more, just watch it ),
Kurosagi (detective story with plenty of funny elements...starring Yamapi and Maki),
Anego(OL in her thirties, her colleague in his twenties-are you interested what love relationship these two people will develop between them? then go and see yourself, i highly recommend it ....funny one wit Jin Akanishi),
Brother Beat (definitely worth watching it...i loved those three brothers and their fights wit their mother especially the oldest one and his shy attitude towards females ),
Majo No Jouken (one of older doramas but also one of my favorite-forbidden love between female teacher and her 17 years old student-it moved me,they have to fetch through difficult situations, prejudice of society etc. )
One Litre Of Tears (very very very touching drama based on the real life story of Aya Kitou-after watching it i realized how much im fortunate to be healthy,to be able to speak, walk and communicate wit others......this drama will give you courage to keep on living and appreciate every single moment in your life and mainly never give up your hope-the title is really suitable )
and finally drama im currently watching and i got absolutely addicted to it-One Pound Gospel (oh my god, i cannot even express how great this serie is.....my sweet Kamenashi is in it again....hes great actor....very unusual plot......i cannot stop laughing every single episode it gets better and better )
i hope i will find other good dramas as those iLve found so far

I know I asked the same thing last year, but I wanted to know what dramas you guys would suggest for someone who primarily watches Korean dramas. She prefers something on the romantic side, but NOT high school dramas or anything silly. _________________

The only Korean drama I've seen is Super Rookie it's part drama/part comedy/part romance. A combination of all three. I liked it.
