| Synopsis |
|---|
| Yutaka plays a former professional boxer who becomes a collector for a loan shark. He grew up in an orphanage in Okinawa Prefecture with heroine Haru (Miki Nakatani), Natsumi (Ai Kato), an aspiring actress, and two others. One of them is now a lawyer who has had to bail Yutaka out and the other a lucky young woman adopted by a rich family. Haru, too, was adopted and has never once left the island where she grew up. When her adopted mother dies, she decides to go to Tokyo to find the old group. Being naive to the ways of the modern urban world, she almost ends up being sold off into the sex industry as soon as she sets foot on Tokyo's fair shores, but Yutaka comes to her rescue. | |

Never a true fan of Yutaka and always thought he was a mediocre performer. However, lately having seen 5 of his other dramas; Koori no sekai, Beach boys, Hoshi no kinka 1 & 2, Manatsu no Merry Xmas, With Love, my perception has drastically changed.
I personally enjoyed the EMOTIONAL INTIMACY (10/10) that Yutaka and Miki portrayed in this rather banal drama (7/10). Which ironically made the drama come to life for me. There are lots of hiccups in this drama with shallow and predictable ending. The drama does drag slightly and becomes a little distasteful, however to do the drama justice, there's a special magnetic charm and force about these two characters which kept the ball rolling in my court; an unrighteous yet self-discipline step-bro who arguably falls head over heels in love with an innocent and artless step- sis. The stretching tension and strings pulled for these two silent, sweet lovey dovey settled with a rather satisfying finale; a long awaited kiss!
The scene where he spilt the milk was hilarious!!!

I was very much looking forward to the arrival of this one, to see for the first time my favorite actor and actress perform together. It's interesting to see Takenouchi Yutaka effectively play a street punk after seeing him as the perfect gentleman in Koori no Sekai; and Nakatani Miki did a great job as a ragamuffin. Not all the characters are particularly sympathetic, though, and the revelations regarding their families border on being unbelievable, and the ending seemed forced and predictable. Hi. this is a request, as well as a short.
I have been enjoying this drama, particularly the performance of the lead actress. It;s nice to see a lady with a bit of meat on her. Although i could have done without the squealing in some episodes, But it seemed to have stopped.
I like the relationship between the cop, and the yakuza.
Here;s my problem. I had downloaded 9 episodes, thinking that was all that there was.
But i see there are actually ten, and episide 10 is no longer.

Keeps getting better, through the first three episodes.
Solid work by by Nakatani Miki, considering the limited dialogue she was given through the first three episodes -- hence, requires a lot of emoting.
As for many of the negative reviews earlier, I think it may be partially due to relying on subtitles, people are missing out on key portions by not understanding nihongo and are unsatisied accordingly. There's a lot of subtlety in this dorama.

I would give it a 7.5 The plot is pretty thin. its about 3 orphans being reunited years after other 2 left the island and went to Tokyo. The one that stayed on the island is protrayed as a simple but good hearted girl that almost gets eaten alive in the 'big city'. I enjoyed this dorama, espcially when I was getting to the last episodes.
The story is rather classic and the twists a bit predictable, but what makes it good are the good actors (very good Nakatani Miki) and the chemistry and well-paced progression towards the end of the series. Boring and stupid. Nakatani Miki's character is very annoying. She shrieks in a shrill voice at the worst moments, which is very irritating. Any happy event for the two main characters did not give me joy. I can't believe Nakatani Miki and Takenouchi Yutaka chose this drama. I watched this series twice but I'm still unable to like it. I don't really like the story as it does not tell much. Miki Nakatani's feeble attempt to get sympathy might be the caused to the downfall of the drama. This drama is ok. Acting good weak story. In the drama they advertise for TBS way to much and bash NHK. I realy got tried of the advertisemments in the drama. seen once still have it but don't think i will watch it agian. I've watched the series (being lucky and able to obtain the vcds) and I think it's not too bad at all. I enjoyed this drama coz I think the story is really sweet and touching PLUS yutaka takenouchi is in it!!!!. Yutaka takenouchi is a really good actor , he can do drama, action, comedy, very versatile and oh so very handsome.
I don't like the character of the main girl becuase she is too innocent and naive for her age that its disturbing and weird. I think their is a lack on character development on her part. I think it would be better if the drama illustrated their relationshiip growing from a brother sister/friend to lovers. they became lovers sooo fast when the fact is they haven't seen each other for a long time, even haru did not recognized ryo. I really enjoyed ryo's character and his character really developed. His willingness to be a better person and to change his ways was worthy of admiratiion. the other characters was okay, the girl who loves the lawyer had little exposure, she should have been taken out of the story. I think she transformed a little too quickly, anyway. the other girl who like ryo, I think her name is nanami. ithe reason for her desire to be an actress was absurd, I think no one in this world would become an actress so that someone they are looking for would see them, she could have just asked some government agency to investigate where her mother is or if she was dead or alive.
what i liked about the drama is that some scenes were really touching and takenouchi's character is soo sweet . Ryo lack some faults though or the drama did not protrayed his bad qualities enoughh. for an ex gangster he sure is perfect. and haru's character Didn't have any !!!!!. I'm sure there is, the drama just didn't show it...nobody can be perfect. I'm sure she was cursing nanami or the other girl in her mind~~ The drama showed more, the faults of the other characters surrounding them. As much as I like the cast of characters, I just could not get into this story. There were some pretty far-fetched plotlines and although the drama strives to be heartwarming and touching, it just ends up being pretty cheesy.
But I did like how Takenouchi Yutaka's character works hard to change in order to please Nakatani Miki's character. As someone mentioned in the above review, it was definitely their emotional intimacy that drove me to watch and complete this drama. What a whirlwind, well-intertwined, quick-paced, humurous first episode! After 5 minutes I couldn't peel my eyes from the screen. I had avoided this title because I thought it sounded boring, and I only knew that I liked Takenouchi's acting, so I wasn't willing to risk it...but I am glad I finally did! The chemistry between the two leads is perfect and a great comic relief. Kato Ai also sparkles as young as she may be. Merry Christmas in Summer is a great drama about Love won and Lost, and Love almost had. I fell in love with this series quickly and was drawn in by the characters and story faster than most other shows (minus SOS, of course). I give this show a BIG thumbs up for creativity and character development, as well as plot twisting things, and showing how some men, and some women can be when in Love. Another love story. Sigh. That brother-sister thing made it worse. Really wondering why Yutaka took this role. Sure, he looks dashing in this drama but it wasn't enough to save this.
Watched this on local TV in 2001. Was really watching for the sake of Yutaka ONLY. Bought VCD set, would like to give it a second chance like Long Vacation, however no time and no real pull factor. What happens if an old friend from an orphanage comes to you from a far island thinking that nothing have changed?. This is the plot of this drama, we can watch how the life of the characters change after Haru (Miki Nakatani) brought back to them childhood memories from Okinawa.
Good performance of Yutaka Takenouchi (Ryo), Ai Kato (Natsumi) and Nakatani when she is not yelling.

There's great chemistry between Takenouchi Yutaka and Nakatani Miki and they acted well, but I hardly felt sympahty or concern for most of the characters. The only reason I kept watching it is so I could find out what happens to Takenouchi and Nakatani. The story is quite lacking in substance and the ending falls flat. Somehow feel that Nakatani Miki is too "deep" an actress to do something so "light". Perhaps I'm too used to seeing her doing stuff with more depth, not so lightweight like this. So the story wasn't that original....but I still was captivated by the charms of it! Miki Nakatani and Yukata Takenouchi are wonderful in their roles. Ai Kato was also very good in a supporting role!

Takenouchi Yutaka acts as a gangster who tries to turn over a new leaf. A new role for him and he really looks the part. Storyline isn't much to talk about.
